Creative Friday

In honor of St. Paddy's Day this week we made leprechaun traps and rainbow cupcakes. The rainbow cupcakes came from here. The fun part was mixing all the colors- we've been reading mousepaint lately so Joe was really into the color mixing....
and he really liked the "rainbow of bowls". We used regular liquid food coloring so the colors were pretty bright, but they could have been better. I envy the multitude of google images that come up under Rainbow Cupcakes!

Our resulting cupcakes were a weird tie-dyed effect. The colors were not as bright as many others I had seen, and because we used smaller cupcake liners the colors mixed together a little bit. The taste was a little to baking powdery for me, but no one else in the family noticed. We used a simple butter cream frosting BUT since I forgot to check if we had powdered sugar before baking we had to make our own. It is easy- you just put regular sugar in the blender and blend on high until it is powdered (it is a one to one ratio). The frosting was a little gritty for me but again no one else complained. I might try a spice grinder next time to see if I can get the sugar finer. Or I will just plan ahead better and buy what we need!

Leprechaun Traps were an idea Joe brought home from school. His teachers had used little footprint stamps around the room, telling the kids the leprechauns had visited. Joe wanted to "trap those sneaky, tricky leprechauns" We also read a story called The night before St. Patrick's day, wherein the kids make traps for the leprechaun only to be tricked in the end.

Our trap was just a decorated pretzel jug with the words " Leprechauns need to go in the trap right now" Joe said that by telling them it was a trap they would think it wasn't a trap, 'cause that's how tricky they are! He also said to tell them there was free gold inside and he set up his train tracks to lead to the trap. We haven't caught anything yet.....
