The Open Heart Farm has something to say similar to my farmer. This was a week or so ago, and they are up in Vermont so I'm not sure if it still holds true, or is true for farms in say NJ (where the passaic river is set to overflow on thursday according to the news) but it seems like it is. Up in Vermont they only have the garlic in the ground and are hardening the crops this week...
This is the last week of non-local food! Holy Moses that went fast huh? The big switch is on sunday, and we are down to the bare bones in the cupboard. There are a few cans of tomato soup, a can of water chestnuts that has been in my pantry since before Joe was born, some bags of rice, m&m's, marshmallows, and about 40 lbs of sugar. We didn't make it to the market this weekend (we went to the movies instead) so I've been cobbling together meals out of whatever is left in the fridge. We are down to 2 lbs of chop meat, a kielbasa, a 1 lb pork shoulder steak, and 1 lb of sandwich steak from the meat share, so we are anxious for our next month's worth! And oh let me tell you the beef eye of round roast- AMAZING! I chucked it in the crock pot with some carrots and onions before a parade, and when we got home it was done and delicious. The hubby has been eating it for lunch and bragging about it.
The check went in the mail for a veggie share this morning. We went for the one closer to us even though they don't have info on their fruit share yet. We admit we are lazy, so the less we travel the better. We are finalizing the "rules" this week so look for another post soon....
