We got :
2 rutabagas- I don't know anything about rutabagas; other than they have a great name and the Christmas ornaments of my childhood were packaged in a cardboard Rutabaga box that was/is as old as me (if not older).
2 lbs of assorted fingerling potatoes- many different colors and delicious looking
1.5 lb of mushrooms- the young man selling them threw in half a pound of fancy mushrooms because I was willing to try to answer his math homework. The problem was: a fish and a half costs a cent and a half. How much do 5 fish cost?
10 lbs of apples and pears- they were selling 5 lb mixed bags. We are going to make some applesauce, apple/pear rollups, and some apple butter.
4 bosc pears- I've discovered the hubby is not opposed to fruit in his sandwhiches
4 winter banana apples- I liked the name and we needed snack
2 small bottles of chocolate milk- again we needed snack
2 16 oz tubs of yogurt- Holy Jesus they are so good! We bought blackberry and blueberry, and they are almost gone.
2 lbs of Bison cubes for stew- it was my splurge protein and it was on sale. Our meat delivery doesn't start for about a week and a half, I needed something to fill in the gaps in the freezer. I think I will make chili.
2 bottles of wine
The wine and the bison were the biggest $ items. And I didnt go in with a shopping plan so I probably could have gotten more for my money if I knew exactly what I wanted to buy. Next week the plan is to get down to $40 including protein.

I'm impressed! You have me rethinking my grocery shopping, I would be hard-pressed to spend less than $60 for a week's worth of food and there are only two of us...
I am positive that rutabega box is WAY older than you! I am guessing it is from when Daddy worked at the A&P when they first got married.
before you get too impressed remember that I still have food in the freezer that has been used!
that sounds fabulous. and what exactly are winter banana apples? are they exactly what the name entails? how narnia.
also, sadly, i cannot do the math problem. i've been REALLY thinking about it, too.
liberal aaaaaaaaaarts....
Winter banana apples sadly do not taste like bananas (though Joe will tell you they do) they are just yellow apples that ripen further into winter than regular apples....
I've been trying to figure out the math problem since then and am no closer than i was before. I do know that 3 fish costs 3 cents though (thats what got me the discount)
Okay, you guys are a little sad - if one and a half fish costs one and a half cents, that means one fish costs one cent, which also means five fish cost five cents.
Sheesh! And "liberal arts" is no excuse...they do teach you to think at those places, don't they? ;)
ahh but we think too much about it- what if the fishmonger is only selling in increments of one and a half? what happens to that half a fish you didnt buy? maybe the fish monger precuts his fish into half sized filets!
